3D printing safety enhancement measures announced by ministries

Strengthen the overall safety of using 3D printing, such as working environment, equipment, materials, and usage methods –

The government is an equipment that produces fewer harmful substances by 3D printing users. In order to create a working environment that uses materials in a safe way, related ministries jointly prepared 3D printing safety reinforcement measures and announced on March 8.

In 3D printing, fine particles and volatile organic compounds are released during the process of applying high heat to the material (filament), and there is a risk of health if 3D printing is performed without sufficient safety measures.

Accordingly, the government has been pushing for safety measures such as mandatory 3D printing safety education, 실 consulting on actual condition investigation and work environment improvement, 안전 safety technology R&D, and 공공 mandatory display of precautions on public procurement 3D printing equipment.
However, since safety management at sites using 3D printing is still to be improved, the government has decided to systematically implement and manage stronger safety measures than before.

The main contents are as follows.
First, it provides guidelines for safe use of 3D printing and establishes a support system.
First of all, the “3D Printing Safety Guidelines” are completely revised to clearly guide how to safely use 3D printing.
In addition, it plans to provide safety information and safety consulting to users by installing a 3D printing safety center at the National Information and Communication Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA).

Second, measures are taken to ensure that the safe use of 3D printing is brought to the site.
To this end, it plans to conduct an annual survey to check the safety of institutions using 3D printing, and recommend institutions with insufficient safety to refrain from using it.
In the case of schools that have confirmed that 3D printing safety is insufficient through a survey, the safety environment of 3D printing laboratories will be improved.
In addition, 3D printing usage information was collected to check the safety usage status of teachers in charge of 3D printing. It plans to develop and distribute apps that it manages.

Third, it will expand the distribution of 3D printing materials and equipment with low emission of harmful substances.
In addition, harmful substances are tested during 3D printing. The school revised the 3D printing material procurement specifications so that materials that have passed the verification can be procured.Public institutions will take measures to use procured goods.

Fourth, improve the system for strengthening 3D printing safety and expand publicity.
The 3D Printing Industry Promotion Act is revised to provide safe working environment guidelines to 3D printing businesses and to give them the obligation to create them.
In addition, in order to participate in R&D tasks and demonstration projects using 3D printing in the future, a safe working environment must be established.

The above measures are promoted through channels mainly used by 3D printing users such as purchasing routes (Nara Marketplace, etc.) and video platforms. We plan to push ahead with the plan.

The government plans to operate a joint public-private “3D Printing Safety Response Team” with related ministries and safety experts to ensure the safety of 3D printing users and further promote the 3D printing industry based on safety.
